When it comes to communicating with customers, the cardinal rule is to make sure the message is in the correct medium to reach your intended audience.
That certainly seems to be what “young” agriculture is attempting to do through YouTube. In this case, though, they’re using a rather interesting vehicle — song parodies.
Earlier this month, the Peterson Brothers parody, “I’m Farming and I Grow It,” a song about the importance of agriculture and farming, went viral. In just a few short weeks, the video has well over 5 million hits, and the boys were interviewed on FOX.
This week “Lil Fred” released his parody, “Farm it Maybe,” to tell the story of living on a dairy farm from a 10-year old boy’s perspective. We will have to see where this goes, but at the time this post was written there were already 219,000 views.
Agriculture certainly has an important story to tell. As our country becomes more urban and people move farther away from the farm, both generationally and physically, there is a widening knowledge gap about modern farming practices and just what it takes to grow enough food to feed 7 billion people.
Education about modern agricultural production practices is the key to closing this knowledge gap. Are song parodies like “I’m Farming and I Grow It” and “Farm It Maybe” an effective way to share agriculture’s story, or are they just fun?
